How to get from Happy Tail back to Happy Pooch!

Happy tail is a condition in dogs that occurs when the tail is repeatedly and forcefully wagged against hard surfaces, causing the skin to become raw, swollen, and painful.  Sometimes it the tail will have beaten so many times that it opens and there is bleeding too.  Here are some treatments for dog happy tail:

  1. Rest: Resting the tail is one of the most important things you can do to help it heal. If the injury is severe, your vet may recommend keeping your dog’s tail in a sling to prevent it from moving.
  2. Cleaning: It’s important to keep the area around the injury clean to prevent infection. Use a mild, antiseptic solution to clean the area and apply a topical antibiotic cream.
  3. Anti-inflammatory medication: Your vet may prescribe anti-inflammatory medication to reduce swelling and pain.
  4. Bandaging: Bandaging the tail can help protect the wound from further injury. Be sure to change the bandage regularly and keep the area clean.
  5. Cone: Using a cone or Elizabethan collar can prevent your dog from biting or licking the injured area, which can delay healing.
  6. Surgery: In severe cases, surgery may be necessary to remove the damaged portion of the tail and promote healing.

It’s important to consult with your veterinarian if your dog is experiencing happy tail. They can determine the severity of the injury and recommend the appropriate treatment.
